MY FIRST WEDDING SHOOT

PreviousNext

I’ve been a fashion and lifestyle photographer for over a decade and I FINALLY shot my first wedding!

Well.. that’s not exactly true. My first ever wedding was in 2009 when I was in college and my auntie and uncle put (17 year old) me forward for their friends wedding. It was one of those ‘our Ema’s got a camera, she can take photos of your wedding’ kind of recomendation. Because some people think if you’ve got a camera, of course you can just photograph a wedding. WRONG.

But I gave it a go anyway. It was actually for that show on Channel 4, ‘Four Weddings’ so I was excited to be part of something that was going on telly, and I was paid £50. I don’t really remember the day but it put off shooting weddings for the next 12 years to follow so I can’t have enjoyed it much at the time.

Then as I hit 30 and some of my friends started getting married, I decided to re-visited the idea.  I think I was too young and didn’t have any life or people skills and never felt confident enough to shoot someones most important day of their lives. I guess everything happens at the right time and that time has come now for me.

As a photographer who has been working in the fashion industry for over a decade, I was craving a bit of change, a change of environment, and most importantly a change of clientele. Fashion is a tough industry, especially the Manchester fashion scene. There’s a lot of fast fashion, a lot of clients who work you to the bone and expect a lot from you for not a lot of money. I did my time in that field and in the last few years i’ve moved away from it and started focusing on working with sustainable fashion and lifestyle brands instead. And with that i’ve been working alongside more ‘normal people’, business owners, artists, creatives, and not always models. I’ll always love fashion photography, it’s in my bones, but I also just love the variety of working with different people and getting to know their stories.

Early last year, I told a few friends I wanted to have another go at shooting weddings and asked them if they knew anyone who was looking for a wedding photographer, to put me forward. Then my friend Lati, a makeup artist i’ve worked with hundreds of times, recommended me to her friend Michaela for her wedding. Michaela booked me off Lati’s recommendation and my fashion work and i’m so so so happy she did. This was my chance to see what I could do and I literally LOVED it.

The wedding was at Crowood Hotel and Spa in Burnley which was a gorgeous and bright location for my first wedding. It also helped that Michaela, her husband Anthony and their 3 children were ALL models. It was just a lovely day and I enjoyed the experience so much and decided this was definitely something I wanted to explore more of and so put myself out there to the world. I’ve now got 5 bookings and counting for 2023 already and hopefully a whole new career path ahead of me.
